The narrative poem brings in a nature-loving man who comes across a hewed stump and confronts the lumbermen responsible for it. A talkative squirrel, an hooting owl, and all the forest's creatures great and small make this a charming tale. The rhyming couplets of the Introduction and the a-b-c-b rhyme of the Ballad's quatrains also make this an enjoyable read-aloud poem. The fitting choice of words, the suspenseful story, and the musical harmony create a pleasing composition.
